I read Bryan's latest family blog up date. You can read the link here. They are considering if the spinal fluid does not go down on its on he will need a shunt.
He is able to respond to commands to pucker his lips. A few days ago he was saying his name I also read in this blog.
This has been a senseless act done to this man. I knew nothing about this sport before I heard about this happening.
I'm still in shock over the reason for it happening. I have heard in the news rumors of stricter beer and hazing laws but I still have no idea what happened besides 2 guys jumped Bryan Stow after the game kicking and beating him causing brain injury.
I would love more information if anyone could help me. Don't laugh. I went to my aerobics class getting information from one of my sports geeks. after her talking about 10 minutes. I said so what do the "Giants"play.LOL

I have been taking a lot moe pain medicine than I like to. I have been in a lot more pain than I have been in a very long time.
The allergy medicine shrunk the blood vessels in my sinuses causing extreme headaches. I t has taken me a while to figure out what the problem was.
I still has a good bit of pain yesterday. I feel bruised from my sinuses even my eyes and my eye balls are bruised.
I always thought it was the decongestant in the allergy pills I was taking. But apparently with my hydrocephalus. I am so sensitive I'm not going to be able to take much of any allergy pill at all.
This does not mean everyone with hydrocephalus can't take allergy medication. It just means I must have damage in my brain that makes me very sensitive to the medicine.
But I am very sensitive to many medications. It is just how my system works. Don't think this is going to apply to all hydrocephalus patience.

No Allerergy medicine
I didn't take any allergy medicine at all today. So I expected to have a lot less of a headache today.
I woke up thinking I was not hurting as much but that did not last long. The fetal position headache kicked in. Once again. I was hoping with not taking the allergy meds it would not be as bad.
I'm thinking maybe everything is just really bruised and can't heal.
I have several people I want to follow up on with their medical issues.
I've met a comedian with pressure issues and even a coupon blogger that is shunted. I would love to be giving them attention and not myself right now.

AH!!!
I'm up late with a headache. Seams like I have done something to irritate my headaches.
I have been blaming my headache of the mornings on taking a trip to SC and riging in the back seat of the Van. Which I did have a bit of a bruised headache the next day after the trip.
But I think my real problem is I have been taking my entire dose of topamax, 300 mg of the evening. When before I was taking 100 mgs of the morning and 200 of the evening.
I wanted to take the entire dose at one time for convince. But I have now realized ever since I I have tried my experiment. The topamax is what is keeping my head rushes settled down. It is keeping my bruised headaches from killig me.
With me waking up and having the headache mostly of the morning that shows me that I need that morning dose.
But it also shows me that I can't go without the topamax. Topamax lowers spinal fluid. I'm sure not a lot but hopefully enough to give me some relief.

Details of injuries
I have been very concerned about Bryan Stow. I have made attempts to contact his family because so many people are making comments about hydrocephalus and shunts.
I know these are words they have no idea about. I can't believe they would just start labeling him before we know for sure if he is going to have to be shunted.
With everything this family is going through I wish my hydro peeps would remember they have probably never heard the word hydrocephalus. Plus there is no reason a doctor is going to mention the word.
I never heard the word in 20 years I was shunted.
I finally found an article that described Stow's injuries. I knew he had head injuries and swelling from the attack.
Stow, a 42-year-old paramedic, remains hospitalized in serious condition from the attack after the Giants-Dodgers game on opening day, March 31. Stow's family said in a blog post Friday that he appeared to mouth his last name and might have tried to give a thumbs-up.
The complaint alleged both men personally inflicted great bodily injury on Stow, "causing him to become comatose due to brain injury and to suffer paralysis." The mayhem count alleged that they "did cut and disable the tongue, and put out an eye and slit (Stow's) nose, ear and lip."
http://www.sfexaminer.com/local/crime/2011/07/complaint-reveals-gruesome-details-fan-beating
In this article it also told that these 2 men were sitting in the same area as Stow. This is apparently how they were linked to the crime.

Is it really my allergy Pill?
I have moisture or more like a allergy in my inner ear. Which causes swelling. I have been advised in the past by doctors to take an allergy pill for it.
I have had very bad headaches from taking an allergy pill with a decongestant.
But with recently having issues I have once again been trying allergy pills. But I thought I would find the weakest allergy pills possible.
I found coupons for children's Allergra. So I have been taking 15 to 30mg of allergera for about a month or more thinking I was helping my headache.
In the past few days I talk to my Dr and got a prescription for Allergera. The past 2 days I have taken 60 mg of Allergera.
I was woke up last night with the worst headache. My eyes feel so bruised. My head feels like its been turned inside out and is just a big bruise.
I know with the decongestants they shrink the blood vessels in the head and sinuses.
I'm thinking the allergy medicine has caused this horrible headache that won't end.
I will be discontinuing my allergy medicine in the morning. I'm crossing my fingers I see results.
I have pain from my ear lobes all the way to my teeth! I'm ready for a break. This is crazy. If I have self inflicted a fetal position headache on myself.
But if the pain goes away I will be happy! It has been a long time since I hurt like this.

Suspects in Stow's Attack
Norwood, according to arrest records, is 6 feet 4 and weighs 250 pounds, roughly matching the description witnesses gave to police of one of the people responsible for the March 31 assault on Stow. Records show that Louie Sanchez is 5 feet 11 and weighs 175 pounds, measurements which also are close to the description witnesses gave of the second assailant. Fontana police described Sanchez as having neck tattoos when he was arrested for drunk driving in 2005, according to court records. The LAPD has described one of the assailants in the Stow attack as having possible tattoos on his neck.
The arrest of the trio marked a dramatic turn in the investigation into the beating on opening day in the stadium parking lot, which left Stow with brain damage. The attack has garnered national attention and placed intense pressure on the LAPD, city officials and the Dodgers organization to calm fears of violence and lawlessness among fans.
In May, police took another man, Giovanni Ramirez, into custody and LAPD Chief Charlie Beck described him repeatedly as the prime suspect in the case. The investigation into Ramirez, however, stalled almost immediately as detectives scoured cellphone records, thousands of images from surveillance camera footage, financial records and hundreds of other possible links and tips, but failed to link him to the beating.
Without any hard evidence, prosecutors declined to bring criminal charges against Ramirez. Instead, police held him in custody for violating the terms of his parole from a previous conviction. Last month, Ramirez was sentenced to 10 months in prison for the violation.
Stow, a father of two, was walking through the Dodger Stadium parking lot with two friends after the Dodgers’ opening-day victory over the Giants when he was attacked.
Stow, who lives in Santa Cruz and works as a paramedic, was wearing Giants apparel and was taunted by the two men, police have said. One of the assailants blindsided Stow with blows to the back and head, police said.
The two assailants repeatedly kicked and punched Stow while he was on the ground. After he appeared to make progress in recent weeks, Stow’s condition took a turn for the worse this week when he suffered seizures and underwent emergency surgery.

I have been following this story recently along with a few others. Until today I didn't know how this happened. I assumed it was like any other big sports event there was a big riot and maybe Bryan Stow got caught up in the middle of a big crowd.
But the way this reads he was target by these 2 men because he was wearing his team colors.
He has had surgery to remove part of his skull to reduce pressure. Much like they did with Congress woman Gabriel Gilfords.
Bryan's brain is not swell because it is injured. It is swelling now to protect it because there is so much bruising from all the injuries.
I know this sounds backwards. But it's your body's way of trying to take care of its self. But in doing that there may not be enough room for all the spinal fluid around the brain(pressure).

Update on Bryan Stow's Blog
Latest Update
I found the Stow family blog. I am so glad I can keep up with the progress of how this man is doing. Ever since I heard about this I have been concerned about the pressure issue with his injuries.
I was not getting enough information from the media. Plus the media never gets it right.
I hope to reach out to the Stow family in case they need support from people that understand about pressure issues.
Hi everyone…as you know, last week was a roller coaster of emotions for us. We had the high of Bryan getting the bone flap put in, to the low of him experiencing a seizure and needing emergency surgery to remove it. We didn’t know after, what that meant in terms of his recovery. Then, the all time high (to date) of him mouthing his last name. The days after that, his responses slowed down. A CT scan showed he did have extra fluid around his brain, which could be the reason he was getting sleepier so yesterday they decided to put in a lumbar drain. It was the less invasive solution to rid the fluid. An hour or so later, his heart rate dropped drastically and he wasn’t becoming as alert as they had hoped. We also noticed that his head looked more concaved then usual. They clamped the drain and took him for another CT scan. They think that the drain was actually working too well. After having it clamped, his heart rate went back up and this morning, the nurse reported he is responsive.
When Bryan is asleep, and not responding, a song always comes to mind that Brian, our LA friend included on the CD he made us all…Waiting for My Real life to Begin. We often wonder what Bryan is dreaming about, and if he’s resting, knowing that he needs the rest because what he’s going through now is not what his real life will be. A part of the song that really sticks out to us is, “I’m walking in my old footsteps, once again. You say, be here now, forget about the past.”
Bryan has proved his strength throughout all this and we know he will continue to amaze us all.

Bryan Stow Giants Fan
LOS ANGELES -- A San Francisco Giants baseball fan who was beaten nearly to death at the Dodgers season opener last week remains hospitalized in critical condition today while detectives sort through dozens of leads in an effort to track down the attackers.
Bryan Stow, 42, from Santa Cruz, Calif., has signs of brain damage and today he had seizures, cousin John Stow told AOL News. Bryan Stow remains in a medically induced coma with half his skull removed to allow his injured brain to swell. He was slammed to the ground while walking through the Dodger parking lot, then repeatedly kicked in the head.
"Bryan is hanging in there. He is doing the best that he can. They are doing everything they can to stabilize him," John Stow, 39, told AOL News. "We talk to him about the old times, the good times we had together, and share stories with music and interact with him as if he were awake. We want to tap into any part of his brain that can hear us and try and keep him holding on."
The Giants owner, general manager and sports announcers all visited Stow in the hospital and presented him with a team jersey signed by all the players, John Stow said.
Meanwhile, police have released composites of the attackers -- two men between the ages of 18 and 25 with shaved heads and mustaches. As a result, dozens of people have called in to say either they recognized the attackers or have heard people admit to committing the assault. Each lead is being followed, including a tip that the duo accosted another group of fans before attacking Stow.
"This is a top priority. We have been receiving a steady stream of leads," Los Angeles police Capt. Dave Lindsay told AOL News. "We're going to announce a pretty substantial reward tomorrow. Hopefully, with this reward we will find the two people who did this."
The reward now stands at $100,000 -- money donated by the city and county of Los Angeles, the Dodger organization and AMR ambulance company, where Stow works as a paramedic.
The divorced father of two young children is a fervent Giants fan who eagerly awaited the Los Angeles game for the past year. He attended with two other friends, all proudly wearing their Giants jerseys.
While exiting the game, Stow became separated from his friends and then was attacked. When the other two men rushed to his aid, they were beaten as well and one had his teeth knocked out, Stow's supervisor, Aiyleen Minch, told AOL News.
The event has devastated Stow's close-knit company, which provides emergency service across the country. Friends and colleagues today are holding a fundraiser barbecue at work, attracting a thousand people after only an hour. Sports items from the Giants and San Jose Sharks hockey team were donated for auction.
"Bryan loves sports, he loves the Giants and the Dallas Cowboys," Minch said. "There's always banter among the employees. He's always on them if they aren't a fan."
Both Minch and co-worker Brian Green said Stow is known for playing practical jokes and having a great disposition, no matter how many hours he worked. He wore the colors of his favorite team under his uniform, depending on whether it was baseball or football season.
The beating has incensed Los Angeles City Councilman Dennis Zine, a former police officer. He said the Dodgers employ 200 off-duty LAPD officers to work the game and that's not nearly enough. When the game gets out, the officers need to be rotated from the stadium to the parking lot to ensure that it's safe.
"They need to beef up security," Zine told AOL News, adding that the Dodger clientele is now attracting more gang-type individuals. "It used to be family safe, family friendly, and it hurts the whole theme of baseball. It's incumbent of [team owner] Frank McCourt to provide security that is very visible, very safe."
Zine was behind a recent measure that changed LAPD regulations to allow off-duty officers to wear uniforms instead of regular clothing when hired to patrol a venue. The presence of more officers would send a strong message, Zine said.
The councilman also criticized the Dodgers for an upcoming promotion that offers half-price beer for six games beginning April 21.
"The fact of the matter is you don't have half-priced beer when you have this type of situation happening," Zine said.
Dodger spokesman Josh Rawitch refused to comment on the security issue and pointed to a team regulation that does not allow tailgate parties or the sale of beer after the seventh inning. He said the team is in the process of putting together a fundraiser.
McCourt offered the following prepared statement: "What I'm very, very satisfied with is that the people in the organization work extremely hard to provide a safe environment for our fans, and any breach of that they take personally. It's very upsetting to them because their job is to make this the safest venue in sports and they work hard at it 24/7. They really, really take this stuff to heart and they work extremely hard to create the environment that we promise our fans."
Late today the Dodgers announced that they are hiring former LAPD Chief William Bratton to assess the security procedures at the stadium and parking lot.
To John Stow, these reassurances aren't enough. He is angered by what he calls a lack of security and inadequate lighting conditions that led to his cousin's beating.
The fact that Bryan has dedicated his life to saving others make this event even more heartbreaking, he said.
"I got a phone call from him the first time he had ever saved someone," John Stow recalled. "The person was dead on arrival from a heart attack, and Bryan was able to work on him and save his life. That was a pinnacle for Bryan. All the work and everything he went through and he was able to bring someone back. It was the most gratifying feeling he ever had."
Anyone seeking to donate to a fund set up for Stow or wishing to contact his family may do so through a facebook page set up in his honor.

Getting my "gym"on
Finally my energy and headaches has got to the point where I can get back into the gym. I'm so excited to get back in the gym. I had a doctors appointment yesterday and I had lost 5 pounds since my last visit.
I was so excited. I may get this 30 pounds off by Christmas!
I have not talked about what I have been working on in a while. I thought I would go over the things I have changed and just been tweaking in my diet.
I'm not restricting myself or crash dieting. I'm not drinking all liquid shakes or taking diet pills. I'm really against those.
About a year ago I learned about protein and how important it was to get protein in our diet. I started adding protein shakes. There was no way I was getting the 80 grams of protein I needed a day by eating protein.
I just don't like meat that much. I started drinking the shakes. (guess what? They are good! ) I fix mine with one or 2 scoops of protein then a cup of milk ans had some fruit or even Nes Quick.
Protein keeps me full. I don't eat as much. I will have a shake for breakfast. Then drink one before my lunch . I don't eat as much for lunch.
I have to be careful I will forget to eat dinner because I'm not hungry...
I upped the topamax which has helped my headaches so I can exercise more. I can now go into the gym. Before pushing myself much would and still does make the headaches get worse. But they are doing a lot better.
I just hate being so dependent on something to keep me from hurting...

One of the first questions anyone with hydrocephalus ask another person with hydrocephalus is what type of shunt you have. I have a list of shunt types and their web sites on the right.
But the most common answer is either a VA or a VP. But to most people they don't understand what this means. so I thought I would give the definitions.
ventriculo-atrial (VA) shunts: a shunt that is placed into a brain ventricle to drain cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from the ventricular system into the heart.
ventriculo-peritoneal (VP) shunts: a shunt that is placed into a brain ventricle to drain cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from the ventricular system into the abdomen

If you see my mind, please return
I found this cute little guy online a while back. I use to have him on my blog at one time to greet everyone but I took him down. I still have him but did not have the heart to discard him. So I thought I would say "Hello to everyone today with him. He does not look like any of my poodles I have had but does look like my Mamaw's, Chi Chi.
Anyway...
One of the side effects of hydrocephalus is memory issues. I've been having some of those with some recent things I have been working on.
If you are reading this blog. You know I blog to help people. I have been doing this since May 2009. Just recently I have started trying to have my blog help me with my income.
I never knew how difficult it was to live on disability.
So some of you may have noticed the ads on my blog. I don't get them as often as I would like.
By the time I get the next one I have forgotten how I did the last. I swear I'm taking notes next time! I look for the notes! And I can't find them!
My mind makes me feel so incomplete! So belittled! I know no one understands! This has always been like my personal prison!
I can't type because my left side is weak! So I'm embarrassed I can't help my friend like she at one time wanted me to. Plus I could not even remember my own things how could I remember hers?

Can you remove your shunt?
In very rare cases does hydrocephalus ever get to the point where it no longer needs a shunt or an ETV to assist in the spinal from being removed from around the brain. You have to understand in 2002 I still did not know I had a condition. I had never heard of the word hydrocephalus.
I was shunted in 1983 nine days after my brain tumor surgery to reduce the pressure that had built up. I was under the in assumption in the 2 years after I was released from the neurosurgeon that the radiation had killed out the remaining tumor (aystrocytomia). I was released from the surgeon.
My mom ask about the shunt we were told not to worry about it. After 2 years it probably didn't even work. I lived with the assumption that it didn't for nearly 20 years.
So in 2002 I started having complications. I had a neurosurgeon that wanted to take the shunt out. I had to do something because of the state I was in. But what I know now.
I wish my shunt had just been clamped off. Instead they took the whole shunt system out and put me on a manual shunt which looked like a test tube draining my spinal fluid.
It had to stay level with my left ear or it sent spinal fluid rushing back into my head that could cause... Well I guess hemorrhage, stroke...
The thing is it happened twice... I was suppose to have a nurse with me at all times. My parents got into it with X-Ray techs because they had rushed my parents out of the room. They explained how important it was not to lay the test tube thing down. Then it happened! So never leave no matter how hard you are being pushed!
I had the manual shunt for 4 days and they found that I was shunt dependent. I have a friend that recently had an ETV. She is having so many headaches after having her shunt removed.
I don't know a lot about ETV. But I am finding they don't do good after someone has been shunted.
I thing ETVs are for obstructive hydrocephalus. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
The thought of being shunt free is a great thought. But it comes with a lot of complications. My complications have been happening since 2002. I now have my shunt. I know I'm suppose to have it. In 2003 I found out I had this condition called hydrocephalus. That's a story for another time.

Headache update
I'm not sure how long its been now I have been taking the 300 mg. of topamax. But it is working for me.
I'm still not taking the total dose at one time as directed. I take 100mg. of the morning and 200 mg. of the evening.
I hope to soon add them together as directed and take the complete dose at one time since the next prescription comes in one pill.
I'm so glad that it's working this time. I had taken it several years ago when I had a programmable shunt. What I didn't know then is I had a non programmable shunt for nearly 20 years my brain could not could not conform to the fixed pressure.
I had a non programmable shunt from the time I was 8 years old after I had my brain tumor. I was then in my early 20's my skull was hard and unable to expand unlike when it may have been when I was younger.
I tried several programmable shunts. My brain just can't deal with them after never having one. Maybe if I had one in the beginning... But I am not a fan.
I have an OSV II and a shunt assist or an anti-syphen device. and take topamax which lowers spinal fluid.

I tried the gym Monday
I don't now if you can tell I'm blogging from my black berry. I sure have not done this in ages.
I went into the gym for a few minutes Monday. I am really sore today.
I have done what I hoped. I am drinking at least 2 protein drinks a day.
I feel like it is helping my energy some. But I'm really sore from the weight training.

Meltdown Monday
So this is something not just hydrocephalus patients deal with but I had not dealt with in a while.
It was embarrassing I couldn't control my emotions.
It make me not want to be around people because of the fear of it happening.
What happened I got ask about a part of my family in a deeming way. I stood up for her but it tore my self confidence down. I just wanted to run away.
Tears just stared to fall down my face I could not control it. I told my friend I was going to leave. She talk to me told me not to and not to worry about it.
I stayed. But I had not got over that night apparently. Four days later I realized I had not heard from my friend I started making these crazy things up that it was over that and my mind was once again going crazy with worry.
Worry something had happened to her family. Then worry I embarrassed her. Worry I did something. Worry it was over me breaking down. I was over loaded with worry.
I know this all sounds crazy to the normal person. But I was hurting thinking she was upset with me. It all turns out she had no cell phone service where she was for 4 days.
I was trying not to be totally phyco and call her mom. So solution to my problem. I will just put a GPS on her car...LOL

Happy 4th of July
Well I'm a few days late. I went this weekend to a cookout at my best friend from high school's house for a cook out. I had a great time most of her family remember what I went through as a child.
My balance was really challenged at the cook out. We were outside and I would not even realize I would be wobbling when someone would steady me.
It was nice to know so many people were taking care of me. But humbling at the same time. I realize I can't had my illness as much as I did in high school.
Having so many complications has made my balance much worse I am certain.
